BLITZ! with music by Lionel Bart and scenery by Sean Kenny, lighting by Richard Pilbrow and sound by David Colliso11, was to present Cockney London under Hitler's bombardment during the Second World War onstage. The curtain rose to reveal a street of London buildings. In the center was the entrance to an underground station. It was late evening, and the wail of air-raid warning sirens rose and fell. From either side, people began to enter, carrying their possessions, scurrying into the station entrance to take shelter below from the bombing. Distant shellfire reflected flashes across tne street facades - as the whole stage appeared to rise. The entire scehe - houses, pavemht, and hurrying people - slowly lifted, revealing the train platform below as it filled with men, women, and children settling into makeshift beds. In the center stood an archway through to the adjacent platform. Suddenly, on the other platform, a train rushed into sight and screeched to a halt, the doors opened, and more people rushed out. Were we in a theatre? Were our eyes or brains kidding us? It was literally unbelievable.
